How to Check If Your Car Is Insured (Free) — the askMID Method

Check whether your own car is insured for free using askMID, the official Motor Insurance Database. Plus the penalties for driving uninsured and what to do if your car isn’t showing.

Driving without insurance is one of the most serious motoring offences in the UK — and it’s surprisingly easy to fall foul of it by accident, for example if a policy lapses or a renewal Direct Debit bounces. The good news: you can check whether your own car is insured for free, using the official database, in under a minute.

The official free check: askMID

Every insured vehicle in the UK is listed on the Motor Insurance Database (MID), run by the Motor Insurers’ Bureau. The public can check their own vehicle for free through the askMID service.

Check your own vehicle here: ownvehicle.askmid.com. If that page doesn’t load, go to askmid.com and choose “Check Your Vehicle”.

You’ll enter your registration and it will confirm whether the car currently shows as insured on the MID.

Can I check if someone else’s car is insured?

Not for free in the normal way. To protect drivers’ privacy, the MID only lets you look up your own vehicle. The one exception is if you’ve been involved in an accident — you can then use the “askMID after an accident” service to find the other driver’s insurance details. There is no free tool to look up any random registration.

My car isn’t showing as insured — what now?

Don’t panic straight away. The most common reason is a simple delay:

  • Newly taken-out or renewed policies can take a few days to appear on the MID.
  • If you’ve just bought or renewed cover, give it up to a week, then check again.
  • If it still doesn’t show, contact your insurer and ask them to confirm the vehicle is on the MID — it’s their responsibility to add it.
It’s worth checking, because the police use automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras linked to the MID. If your car isn’t listed, you can be stopped even if you genuinely believe you’re insured.

The penalties for driving uninsured

If you’re caught driving without valid insurance, the consequences are severe:

  • A £300 fixed penalty and 6 penalty points as a minimum.
  • If it goes to court, an unlimited fine and possible driving disqualification.
  • The police can seize the car on the spot — and ultimately crush it.
  • An IN10 conviction stays on your record and pushes future premiums up sharply for years.

Stay on top of all three

Insurance, MOT and tax are the three things that keep you road-legal — and all three are checked automatically by ANPR. It’s worth setting reminders for each renewal date. While insurance is checked on askMID, you can check your MOT history and tax status free on MOTMate any time — no signup, instant results.
