All information is pulled live from official sources — the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) for MOT records, and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) for tax status and vehicle details.

Where our data comes from
Every vehicle check on MOTMate is powered by two official government sources: the DVSA MOT History API, which provides the complete MOT test record for a vehicle — pass and fail results, mileage readings, advisories and defects — and the DVLA Vehicle Enquiry Service, which provides live tax status, SORN status and registered vehicle details. We don’t scrape, estimate or resell data: what you see is what the government holds, fetched at the moment you search.
How we choose products in our guides
Alongside the vehicle checker we publish buyer’s guides for things UK drivers actually need — dash cams, OBD2 scanners, tyre inflators, jump starters and car care kit. Products are selected on merit, not on who pays us. For each guide we:
- Shortlist products that are widely available in the UK at sensible prices
- Compare specifications, real-world owner feedback and long-term reliability reports — not just launch-day reviews
- Prioritise kit that suits typical UK conditions, roads and regulations
- Revisit guides regularly and mark them with a visible “Updated” date when recommendations or prices change
If a product stops being a good buy — a price rise, a better rival, reliability issues — we replace it. No brand can pay to appear in, or stay in, a MOTMate guide.
